We made the mistake of not researching cheaper options without feeling pressured to pick the first cheap option we found or risk buying a brand new expensive one we were uncertain we would use.
A toddler backpack carrrier is one of those items that naturally has a limited lifespan. Becuase of that you can find a lot of used options available on the internet that help save money:
- Facebook Marketplace – 20+ options available with varying price ranges and pickup or shipping options
- REI Used Gear – if you’re an REI Member you can find a few things online or in the store if you happen to be walking around
- GearTrade – that has a lot of a great used outdoor equipment
Before our daughter turned 1 she was in a backpack carrier. The backpack has limited features though, it didn’t come with a sunShade, stirrups, storage, and had limited cushioning for both the child and the one wearing the carrier. She did great though, loved hiking, and loved being carried around. At the age of 1, COVID-19 hit and we had to take a break from hiking as everything was shutting down.
When the state parks finally opened back up we desperately wanted to get outside. It had been several months, and our daughter was taller, heavier, and extremely opinionated. The backpack carrier was not comfortable, her legs would dangle, she couldn’t rest her head well to take a nap, and there wasn’t any storage for carrying food or water.
After hunting for used equipement we found a very lightly used Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature Series Child Carrier. It had most of the features we were looking for and was only $140:
- sunshade
- more cushion and security for toddler
- adjustable support for parents
- drool guard that is detachable, washable and great cushion for taking naps
- extra storage and a specific pack for diapers
- stirrups for the toddler
Moral of the story:
Combined we spent $190 for two used carriers, saving us around $200. Both carriers are used, in good condition, resellable, and can be used for any future children we have.
Upgrade Pick: Osprey Poco Plus Carrier
If or when we decide to upgrade we have been looking at the Osprey Poco Plus Carrier because of its additional features ideal for backpacking adventures:
- extra storage to fit sleeping bags or event a tent
- ample side pockets for holding water or snacks
- mesh back for ventilation
Happy Hiking!
