Hey There!
I’m Danny Freese. Welcome to our Blog FreezingOutdoors!
I am a software engineer that transitioned from academia in Biological Sciences. I spent 7 years doing research in Environmental Conservation and Plant Environmental Sciences, researching everything from the impacts to invasive plant species on the environment to climate change before deciding to quite my PhD and pursue a career as a software engineer.
I started this blog because while I’m not a biologist today, I am still passionate about the outdoors and conservation. I wanted to pass on that appreciation and respect to my children while we still have that chance.
As I started planning family trips, I realized it’s very involved to plan family-friendly, or even intentionally planning non family-friendly outdoor vacations. I dedicate quite a bit of time discovering the next hike, planing logistics, keeping a budget, reviewing gear. So in this blog I wanted to catalog and share our experience in hiking around the Appalachians and beyond: details of the hiking trails, navigation, rating family-friendliness, and tips we’ve picked up along with way. Also as avid environmentalists, I wanted to share our methods for lowering our environmental footprints while being technology and financially minded family.
